The aged care support sector is entering into a period of dramatic expansion worldwide, and also in India, with the shift in population weightings towards the aged. This shift, when matched by the need for younger people to relocate both within and beyond national borders for employment, is bringing a need for alternatives to the traditional family-based support structures for the aged.
Responses to these shifts in most countries have been a mix of state and private sector initiatives including the development of home-based support systems and residential homes. Appropriate support for the aged requires a high level of coordination between highly-skilled health professionals and less trained daily support staff.
